With the inclusion of Suvendu Adhikari, BJP is looking more confident than ever and has opened up all fronts against the rival TMC. In a stringing Press conference, BJP leader and women’s rights activist, Smt. Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury made series of allegations on CM Mamata Banerjee and the TMC, accusing them of overlooking welfare of the West Bengal farmers.
Farmers are in a despicable situation in West Bengal. The farmers in Bengal don’t get the reasonable and lawful price for their crops. This government has broken the procurement infrastructure and the TMC backed Middlemen are controlling the sector now. These are the words of BJP Leader, Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury, popularly known as Nirbhoy Didi.
She has said that the per capita income of farmers is much lesser than the standard amount and most of them are below the poverty line. The farmers of Northern Bengal are so vulnerable that their family's women are often seen to have been a victim of women and child trafficking. This horrendous situation is due to the indecisive and horrible government present in the state.
Addressing the press conference, the BJP made stinging allegations on the TMC accusing them of overlooking the Farmer’s welfare and not allowing Bengal Farmers to have benefits of PM Kisan Samman Nidhi.
Nirbhoy didi said, “It is really disheartening to see that the party who came to power by standing upon a farmer’s movement (Shingur - Nandigram Andolon) has kept the farmers in such a horrible situation now.”
BJP alleged that PM, Narendra Modi has implemented various welfare schemes with regards to the farmers, however Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee due to her political motivations, has never implemented those in Bengal.
“The MSP of paddy is set at Rs. 1868 per quintal but the farmers are getting not more than Rs. 1300 – Rs. 1400 per quintal. The remainder which is around Rs. 500 – Rs. 400 goes into the pocket of the TMC backed ‘Dalals’,” Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury said.
Earlier, Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, had said, “All states of different political ideologies have given the PM-Kisan benefits to their farmers except for West Bengal where the government is not letting them have it over their political reasons. It pains me to see the Opposition playing political games over the farmers.”
The PM Kisan Samman Nidhi was operational since 1.12.2018 as per the National Information Centre. Under this scheme the central government in every financial year provides Rs. 6000 to all farmers registered under this scheme in three equal installments of Rs. 2000 each by direct benefit transfer system. This is a 100% central funded scheme. During the lockdown, the government gave an extra 2000 rupees to all the farmers under this scheme to sustain their livelihood.
As per PM, a total of 70 lakh farmers from west Bengal are deprived of this benefit. Each of them is losing Rs. 14,000. The central government has been requesting the state government time and again to submit the name and bank account details of the farmers but the state government is refusing to do so.
After much controversy, the TMC government has written a letter to the Agriculture Minister of India, Narendra Singh Tomar and asked the Central government to transfer all the pending money under this scheme to the state government. The state government is willing to further distribute it among the farmers. On this Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury said that, “this government is known for its cut money culture. This money will never reach to the farmers.”
90% farmers in Bengal are marginal farmers. Hence, they need this money to buy the seeds, fertilizers and pesticides. A recent NABARD study named “Doubling of Farmers’ Income by 2022 Issues and Strategies for West Bengal” released on March 28, 2020, shows that the overdependence on private moneylenders is pushing a majority of the farmers into financial crisis.
Nirbhoy didi further said, “This government is busy with the ‘unnoyon’ of their tolabaajs and local gundas. BJP will not tolerate this ill treatment of the farmers. We will launch a vigorous protest against this government’s demonic policies.”
